A team at CERN once took the packaging that protects particle detectors and gave it to forensic teams, so families waiting to identify their dead would have more time. That idea started at a rooftop barbecue. Daniel Dobos is a particle physicist, formerly at CERN, a co-founder of THE PORT humanitarian hackathons, and a father of three. This is a conversation about the gap between using AI and understanding it. Daniel argues we are still at the very beginning, that we currently substitute enormous amounts of compute for knowledge we do not have, and that the human brain is the proof a better answer exists. Along the way: what happens to electronics in orbit, why his children found the risk of generative AI without being told, and what dreaming might mean for a language model.
